This old section was the original 1955 alignment of National Route 1 for the Berowra-Ourimbah portion of the Sydney to Newcastle journey. It was also the first section of the Pacific Highway to be bypassed - with the State Highway No. 26 (Calga-Peats Ridge-Ourimbah) opening to traffic in 1964, followed by sections of the F3 (then Berowra-Calga Tollwork) in 1965, 1966 and 1968. However, these bypass routes did not take the National Route 1 shield until November 1974 when they were declared part of the National Highway.

The Calga to Ourimbah section of Pacific Hwy became Alternative Route 1 for five years until 1979 when the whole route became State Route 83.
