General Overview:

Metroad 1 directly replaced National Route 1, the major north-south highway through Sydney. While not the major through route between its two endpoints, Metroad 1 still serves a large amount of traffic - a high percentage of which is commuter traffic - as well as the airport and the Port Botany industrial area. The non-freeway sections - the Princes and Pacific Highways - are generally 6-lanes wide with S-lanes and a 30cm median. South of Sutherland there is an improvement in the alignment, with near freeway conditions along between President Ave (Sutherland) and Yarrawarrah and south of Heathcote.

The majority of the route was constructed prior to the introducation of Metroad 1 - the only significant construction since 1993 being the Eastern Distributor and some reconstruction due to the M5 East near the Airport Tunnel. The more detailed history is covered in each individual section of the route.

Notable events in the history of Metroad 1:

Oct 1993 - Route signed
Dec 1999 - Metroad 1 put underground through the Eastern Distributor tunnels
